Family Activities

Groton is a family friendly community with many fun activities available. An impressive baseball/softball complex is located on the west side of town along with the soccer fields and the ice skating rink. Every January the Carnival of Silver Skates produces an excellent ice skating extravaganza. The 2009 swimming pool has tennis and basketball courts located on its eastern edge. The city park has a playground and a walking path as well as places to camp overnight. Volunteers work with the Scouts, 4-H clubs, and youth football. Visitors will also find an excellent nine-hole golf course with a driving range, club house, and cart rentals. Leagues bowl weekly at the six-lane alley. Hunting and fishing is easily found in the rural areas along with hunting lodges and rooms to rent which provide convenience and easy access. Local School

The Groton Area School District extends into five counties and includes nearly 600 students from Junior Kindergarten through Grade 12. It has been identified as a “Distinguished District” on the 2010 NCLB Report Card. To achieve this top rating, the school must meet several high standards, met only by four other school districts in the state of South Dakota. The usual class offerings exist along with three vocational education courses and six college prep classes. Co-curricular activities include a wide range of athletic offerings as well as many excellent fine arts programs. Three of the most recent additions to the school system include Response to Intervention (RtI), extra instruction based upon individual student needs in reading; Junior Kindergarten; and GRASP, an after school program for students in Junior Kindergarten through Grade 5. Local Housing

Housing in Groton is available for all income levels. There are low income apartments located in The Village on the west side of Highway 37. Three HAPI homes (Homes Are Possible, Inc.) were built in 2011 along with a spec home being completed near the baseball/softball complex. Many nice houses are currently for sale as well as empty lots where a home can be built or moved in from another site. New homes are constantly being constructed, making the search for a new place to live much easier and more affordable than ever. There are two real estate brokers in the city of Groton who are eager to assist new residents in finding the right place for their families. Businesses Meet Family Needs

The healthy Groton business district will meet all of your family needs. A new grocery store along with an adjoining strip mall is an impressive new addition to the city. Within that strip mall is a clinic with a full-time physician’s assistant. Across the street from the strip mall is a drug store and a chiropractor’s office. A fully staffed and certified nursing home with an Alzheimer’s unit as well as an independent senior living facility is located within the city limits. The Groton Transit bus system is available to transport individuals to the bank, grocery store, school events, etc. It is also used daily to take pre-school children to and from day care and school. The transit bus also provides medical runs to doctors in Aberdeen. The City of Groton has many unique businesses that provide employment for many individuals and service to the entire community. There is a floral and home décor business, a bio-refining business, and a flourishing telephone cooperative which provides telephone service, cable television, high speed Internet, and cell phones.
